SubletNY vs Craigslist for NYC sublets
Use Craigslist when you want the widest net: year leases, brokered apartments, rooms, furniture and everything else, across every neighbourhood, from anyone. Use SubletNY when you are looking for, or offering, a furnished sublet of 30 days or more in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens and want to search by the exact dates you need, know the lister is a leaseholder who confirmed their email, and pay nothing to list or to rent.
Facts about Craigslist are taken from the sources listed at the end and were last checked on October 28, 2026. Craigslist is not affiliated with SubletNY.
Feature by feature
| Feature | Craigslist | SubletNY |
|---|---|---|
| Who lists | Anyone with an account: owners, tenants, brokers and management companies. Posts are marked "by owner" or "by broker" and can be filtered by that. | NYC leaseholders subletting their own place, plus clearly labelled reposts of public listings; reposts never enter the search index. |
| Cost to list | $5 per apartment-rental post in the New York City area, paid when the post is created (Craigslist fee page, checked on the date below). | Free. |
| Cost to rent | No site fee. Brokered posts may carry a broker fee set by the broker. | Free. No broker fee and no service fee; SubletNY does not take payments. |
| Stay length | Any: most posts are 12-month leases; sublets and short stays are mixed in under the same categories. | 30 days or longer, by exact dates, so a search for "June 1 to August 15" only shows places free for those dates. |
| Verification | None beyond an account. The FTC notes that reported rental scams often start as fake listings on sites like Craigslist and Facebook. | The lister confirms their email with a one-time code before the listing goes live; listings pinned outside New York City are rejected; reposts are labelled as such. |
| How you make contact | An anonymised email relay, or a phone number when the poster adds one. | A contact form on every listing reaches the lister directly. Renters can also save a search and be emailed when a matching listing is posted. |
| Coverage | Every borough and the suburbs, in one list per category. | Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, with a page per neighbourhood showing live counts and asking prices. |
When Craigslist is the better choice
- A 12-month lease, a brokered apartment, or anything outside Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
- Sheer breadth: furniture, moving help, roommates wanted and housing in the same place.
- Listing a sublet for under 30 days that you will host yourself (SubletNY does not accept stays under 30 days).
When SubletNY is the better choice
- Searching by the exact dates you need instead of reading each post for availability.
- Knowing who posted: every lister confirmed their email, reposts are labelled, and nothing outside NYC gets in.
- Asking prices per neighbourhood and a monthly price index, so you know whether a sublet is priced fairly before you write.
- Listing for free with a guided form instead of a $5 post that expires.
